In recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17th, we proudly celebrate our commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging across our Belgravia Leisure managed venues.
We are clear about our intentions and describe this in our statement of support to all which includes a commitment to welcome the LGBTIQA+ community into all we offer.
At the heart of our approach lies a simple ethos: everyone is welcome. Dr Jeff Walkley, our National Disability and Diversity Manager, captures this sentiment, stating, “Belgravia Leisure proudly welcomes, supports, and includes all people into the facilities, programs, services, and employment it offers to communities across Australia and New Zealand.
“We achieve this by actively engaging with each community to better understand local priorities and preferences. Through collaboration and partnership, we strive to create an environment where all individuals feel valued and embraced in the world of leisure and sport.
“This commitment extends to the LGBTQIA+ community and it is displayed in our actions, strategies and policies aimed at fostering a culture of welcome and celebration,” Jeff said.
Last year, the Belgravia Leisure Census highlighted our dedication to diversity. Gathering comprehensive data about our workforce gave us invaluable insights into the demographics and characteristics of our team members. Nearly 9% of our team members across Australia and New Zealand identify as Lesbian, Gay, or Bisexual.
These findings highlight a spectrum of diverse identities, emphasising the significance of fostering an inclusive workplace culture where our people can thrive authentically.
Events like the annual Rainbow Golf Cup Day at Yarrambat Park Golf Course showcase the remarkable efforts of our teams in celebrating diversity and inclusion.
In partnership with organisations such as Melbourne Rainbow Golfers and Proud 2 Play, we cultivate inclusive environments where LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies can unite for sports and recreation, free from discrimination. These events not only foster a sense of belonging but also convey a powerful message of solidarity to the broader community.
Yarrambat Park Golf Course‘s nomination for the 2023 Bunnings Trade Local Government Initiative of the Year at the Vicsport Awards for Rainbow Golf Day underscores our commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within the sports community. Stay tuned for the announcement of winners on June 12.
For previous IDAHOBIT celebrations, the team at MOVE Moonee Valley’s Ascot Vale Leisure Centre proudly made bold statements. Transforming spaces into vibrant celebrations of diversity and adorning them with pride flags and rainbow decorations.
This year, you’re invited to a night of swimming and fun for the LGBTQIA+ community, their families, friends, and allies. This family-friendly event welcomes children and promises an evening of enjoyment for all.
Amy Cross, MOVE Moonee Valley Area Manager, emphasises our commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. “We’re proud to host this swimming night, creating a welcoming and safe environment where everyone can truly be themselves and have fun. For more information and to RSVP you can contact Keilor East Leisure Centre at 9283-6402 or email kelcinfo@movemv.com.au. We hope to see you there!”
Find a venue near you and reach out to your local venue to see if they have anything planned. We welcome, support, and include all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Our aim is to ensure that our spaces feel safe for everyone, where our teams, members and guests can truly be themselves, every single day of the year.
