Dozens of people living with dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions are finding confidence, connection and improved wellbeing through Nambour Aquatic Centre’s Brain Body Wellness program.
Developed in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Dementia Network, a community information network assisting people living with dementia, the program was created in response to a growing need for accessible leisure opportunities for people living with cognitive and neurological conditions.
Extensive consultation with carers, health professionals and community support services identified a gap in inclusive physical activity opportunities specifically designed for this cohort.
Many people were experiencing social isolation, reduced mobility and a loss of confidence, while carers were seeking activities that could support their loved ones’ wellbeing.
Brain Body Wellness was established as a community-led solution, providing a safe, supportive and welcoming environment where participants can stay active, build connections and remain engaged in their community.

A community-led response to a growing need
Held in Nambour’s fully accessible indoor heated pool, the twice-weekly program (running Mondays 10am and Friday 1pm) combines gentle water-based exercise with music, singing, laughter and social connection.
Led by Aqua Instructor Glenn, the sessions are designed to support participants’ physical, emotional and cognitive wellbeing while providing opportunities for carers to connect and engage alongside their loved ones.
Glenn said Brain Body Wellness’ safe and welcoming environment is the key to its success, with attendance continuing to grow as more discover the benefits it provides.
“Beyond the health benefits, Brain Body Wellness has become a place of belonging where our participants build friendships, stay active and maintain important connections within their community.”
Creating connection, confidence and belonging
June, Kevin, Lloyd and Lynette are among those benefitting from the regular sessions. For 88-year-old June, Brain Body Wellness has helped her maintain her own wellbeing while continuing to care for her 90-year-old husband, Kevin.
“I take part in the exercises while Kevin is looked after poolside by the team,” June shared. “We love spending time with the Nambour team and the others here.”
Lloyd, who lives with Parkinson’s disease has improved his strength, mobility and confidence, while the social environment has enabled him to form new friendships and feel more connected to the community.

Participant Lynette added the program has had a positive impact on her balance and mobility. “It helps prevent me from experiencing falls and I really enjoy the chance to float and unwind afterward.”
Nambour’s Venue Manager Kate Baker said that impact of the initiative is both professional and personal.
“A woman approached me with the idea of creating a space where people with dementia and neurological conditions could come together to exercise, have fun and connect with others facing similar experiences.
“Having a parent with Parkinson’s disease, I’ve seen firsthand how valuable a program like this can be. For my dad, it’s provided a safe place to stay active and build genuine connections beyond the home. We truly believe this is an initiative that is making a real difference.”
Supporting communities across the Sunshine Coast
Brain Body Wellness’ success is measured through participant and carer feedback, attendance data and ongoing team member evaluation. Outcomes consistently highlight improvements in confidence, mobility, mood, social connection and overall wellbeing.
Further benefits include greater community inclusion, reducing stigma around neurological conditions, increased visitation to the community hub and utilising off-peak programming hours.
In celebration of the program’s support of Belgravia Leisure’s mission of connecting communities to leisure, Brain Body Wellness was also recognised with a Community Connection Award at the company’s internal QLD/NT conference in 2026.
Through collaboration, innovation and a commitment to community wellbeing, Nambour Aquatic Centre and the Sunshine Coast Dementia Network have created a program that is helping people stay active, connected and engaged, demonstrating the positive role leisure venues can play in improving lives.
