Belgravia Leisure has added its backing to the Victorian State Government’s Get Your Move On campaign, aimed at giving Victorian kids more opportunities to participate in physical activity.
The Victorian Government announced the Get Your Move On campaign in February, with the aim of getting children moving at home, in school, and outdoors, promoting and instilling healthy, active habits for life. The campaign encourages kids to engage in 15 minutes of physical activity four times a day, through activities they enjoy – like walking the dog, riding to school, or kicking a football with friends.
For Belgravia Leisure, the campaign aligns with its own range of programs and partnerships aimed at fostering healthy lifestyles and exercise. The company has collaborated with Swimming Australia to develop and deliver GOSwim, a swimming and water safety program focused on contemporary experiential and activity-based learning, encouraging students to explore pathways into competitive and recreational lap swimming. It also has a partnership with Hall’s Taekwondo to host its martial arts hubs at Belgravia Leisure Centres.
The Belgravia Sports Community supports Australia’s vast network of local sports clubs, providing training and knowledge, both in person and online, to clubs and their volunteers, as well as consulting services for peak sporting bodies and local councils. Finally, Belgravia Leisure’s Australian Sports Camps program offers interactive and fun skills-based coaching-programs to help children aged six to 16 years to improve their game and their love for their chosen sport. Belgravia Leisure is also supporting the Victorian Government’s aim to get more kids active as a registered provider for its Get Active Kids Voucher Program.
Three years ago, Belgravia Group Chairman and CEO, Geoff Lord, announced a commitment to boosting physical activity among one million children across Australia per year, through two new initiatives: Belgravia Kids and the Belgravia Foundation.
Belgravia Foundation is a registered charity established to connect people with a disability or experiencing disadvantage to Belgravia Group’s aquatic, fitness, sports or recreation facilities in more than 200 locations across Australia. Belgravia Kids provide swimming and water safety lessons and gymnastics for children and teens. Both organisations have been working in partnership with Belgravia Group’s health and leisure companies and franchise networks to improve health and wellbeing outcomes among Australian children, as well as people in marginalised communities across the country.
“I believe we can do more to tackle the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of our children, which can lead to chronic conditions such as obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease,” said Mr Lord at the launch of the One Million Children commitment.
Participating in regular physical activity boosts children’s physical and mental health and improves academic performance, improving concentration and the ability to retain information and solve problems. As well as at home and at school, the Get Your Move On campaign provides support and services for children and young people to become more active in their community, via local sport and recreation facilities across Victoria.
The Get Your Move On campaign is part of the Victorian Government’s broader $24.2m Active Schools initiative, aimed at ensuring all Victorians aged 5 to 18 years old have the skills, confidence and motivation to live a happy and healthy life by boosting their physical movement each day outside of school. Active Schools supports schools to take a holistic approach to physical activity, and encourages kids to be active through quality physical education, quality school sport, active classrooms, active travel, active recreation and a supportive school environment.
