After finding friendship and confidence through Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre (TRAC)‘s first All Abilities Disco, one participant, Arthur is encouraging others to join in with a new monthly program designed to support adults in Thomastown experiencing disability, loneliness, social isolation and mental health challenges.
Following the success of the pilot event, which attracted almost 50 attendees, the monthly program will launch ahead of Loneliness Awareness Week (3-9 August), held on the first Thursday of every month from 12pm – 1:30pm.
“Thanks, TRAC, for hosting the first ever All Abilities Disco,” Arthur said.
“It was a great atmosphere. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, including all the attendees, carers and friends who attended.”
As both a participant and program assistant, Arthur experienced first-hand the impact a simple, regular social activity can have on people’s wellbeing.
The inclusive community program aims to create regular opportunities for friendship, social connection, confidence building and community participation for people of all abilities across Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Creating a place where everyone belongs
Many attendees arrived not knowing what to expect, but quickly found themselves laughing, dancing and connecting with others in a safe and supportive space.
Featuring a live DJ, entertainment, food and dance competitions, the social inclusion initiative created a supportive environment where participants could enjoy themselves while building confidence and friendships.
Building on community feedback
TRAC’s Community Engagement Coordinator Aziz said the idea emerged through conversations with participants at the venue’s previous celebration, ‘We are the Champions’ held on International Day of People with Disability in 2025.
“After seeing the positive response, we wanted to create an ongoing program that responded directly to what our community told us they wanted.”
Building on that momentum, TRAC hosted a ‘come and try’ disco in May.
“Despite several NDIS partner groups being unable to attend, we still welcomed over 45 participants to the event. The response reinforced the need for inclusive social opportunities within our community,” Aziz concluded.
Support from community partners helped make the inaugural disco a success, including local NDIS provider Care With Us, who donated several hundred dollars worth of prizes for the dance competition.
Creating a welcoming and inclusive space
The All Abilities Disco has been designed to be accessible and flexible, allowing participants to enjoy the event in a way that suits them. No bookings are required and attendees are encouraged to bring sensory items or sensory kits to help them feel comfortable throughout the event.
