18 members of an inclusive basketball program in Kadina for people with disability are proudly wearing new team jerseys thanks to a community fundraiser, led by Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre.
The Inclusive Basketball Program, run in partnership with the venue, serves as a supportive pathway into ongoing community sport for players who may not otherwise have the chance to join a traditional team.
Approximately $400 was raised for the group, supported by additional funding from Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre.
Held each Wednesday, the program provides a structured and supportive environment for participants to stay active, connect with others and build confidence through sport.
Venue Manager Giles Ellis says the program has strong momentum and is now one of the venue’s most well attended community programs.
“Participation has expanded to include students from the Kapyong Class, a local school program for students with mild disability. We’re pleased to bring together participants of different ages and abilities to create a social and fun environment so no one misses out.”
Collective effort for life-changing impact
Program coordinator and volunteer Kym Lamshed, alongside participants Andrew Miller and Sarah Hosking led the fundraiser by collecting and returning cans and bottles from within the venue.
The activity gave the group an opportunity to contribute directly to the program, while building their independence and teamwork skills in a sustainable way.

Andrew Miller says: “I’ve enjoyed playing basketball with Kym and got to meet lots of new people. My favourite part is playing shooting games with Jake, Jamo, Tyson and Mark.”
“I liked raising the money but sorting the sticky cans and bottles was a bit gross.”
Now, the fully uniformed team is playing with a real sense of pride in their involvement with the sport. Continued growth of the program is expected, to support further participation for people with disability.
The program is a reminder of the power of participant‑led initiatives and local partnerships, elevating inclusive programs across Belgravia Leisure venues.
