At a time when Australian communities are seeking deeper connection with nature and each other, the Yarra Ranges Discovery Series, delivered by Belgravia Leisure in partnership with Yarra Ranges Council, has bridged the gap through free, family-friendly outdoor experiences across the region.
Research from the National Environmental Science Program shows that people who feel highly connected to nature are 4.6 times more likely to report high life satisfaction.
The teams at Monbulk Aquatic Centre and Yarra Centre have met this need through the free program, which brought people of all ages and abilities together in guided walks, bike rides, mindfulness and outdoor workouts across the region.
Participants were enabled to get moving while discovering the region’s natural and community spaces. Delivered by Belgravia Leisure fitness instructors, the sessions ensured genuine care and local expertise.
Belgravia Leisure’s Yarra Ranges Area Manager, Darren Allen, led a Yarra Valley Trail bike ride which brought breathtaking views, horses, runners, walkers and all the benefits of offroad riding. Darren said that the safe, well‑designed trails are key to encouraging outdoor movement.
“Fear of traffic is the biggest barrier to recreational cycling. Trails like Lilydale to Yering remove that barrier entirely, allowing riders of all abilities, including people using adaptive bikes, to ride with confidence and simply enjoy the experience.
“As the network grows, riders will be able to explore the very best of the Yarra Ranges, creating one of Victoria’s leading trail systems,” Darren said while also highlighting the long‑term value of the partnership with Council.
“Belgravia Leisure has delivered the GOride and Auscycle programs in the Yarra Ranges since 2022, helping instill confidence in the next generation of riders. Adding instructor‑led Discovery Series lessons on these trails is a natural next step. This collaboration with Council is just the beginning.”
An arts and culture walk through the Dandenong Ranges with a ngurrak barring representative from Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation allowed participants to explore artworks, landscapes and stories through an Indigenous lens. Stops at Karwarra Gardens and Silvan Reservoir Lookout gave them chance to pause and slow down to notice their surroundings intentionally.
During a family walk along the Warburton Rail Trail, families were supported to get moving in nature. Supporting evidence from Parks Victoria shows people are more likely to enjoy and sustain physical activity outdoors, reinforcing the importance of programs which remove barriers to participation, such as associated cost.

The program removes cost and confidence barriers, helping more people stay active, socially connected and engaged with their local community.
