Hollie Smith, Lifeguard & Swim Teacher at Splash Devonport Aquatic & Leisure Centre
On World Day for Health and Safety at Work (28 April), Belgravia Leisure is recognising team members like Hollie Smith, who plays a key role in keeping the community safe at Splash Devonport Aquatic & Leisure Centre.
Thanks to the team’s ongoing commitment to high standards of safety, Splash is one of two Tasmanian venues to retain their 5-star safety accreditation from Royal Life Saving (RLS) for the third year in a row.
This commitment is brought to life through dedicated team members like Hollie, a Lifeguard and Swim Teacher who has been with the team for 2.5 years.

Growing up immersed in surf lifesaving and swimming lessons, Hollie developed a strong connection with aquatic environments from a young age.
“I’ve always felt comfortable in and around the water,” Hollie said. “Those positive experiences encouraged me to work in aquatics so I could help others feel confident and safe too.”
Like many frontline roles, the position also comes with its challenges. Hollie has worked hard to build her confidence when educating patrons about safety rules, recognising that while many people appreciate the explanation, some can be resistant.
“By staying calm and clear, I help people understand that the rules are there to keep everyone protected.
Hollie is currently studying a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education at the University of Tasmania and hopes to continue educating others on water safety after graduating.
In recent months, Hollie has found it particularly rewarding to see her role extend beyond her direct responsibilities, with fellow lifeguards approaching her for advice and support.
“More recently, Hollie has also supported her colleagues through Splash Devonport’s transition to Phlozone, a digital safety and compliance system,” said Hamish Moncur, Operations Manager at Splash.

“Taking the initiative to learn the software thoroughly, she has assisted with daily checklists, headcounts and intervention reports which helps build confidence and consistency across the team.”
A record 102 Pool Safety Assessment (PSA) and Aquatic Facility Safety Assessment (AFSA) assessments were conducted on Belgravia Leisure venues in 2024/25. These assessments delivered an overall safety score of 90.96% – exceeding the industry compliance mean by a wide berth of 10.6%, as reported by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia.
