Getting in and out of the pool used to be a challenge for many in Healesville, now locals say a simple upgrade at Jack Hort Memorial Community Pool is making it easier to stay active and connected.
Since the installation of accessible Platypus Pool Steps late last year, funded through an over $10,000 Australian Government Stronger Communities Programme grant, the impact is already being felt across the venue.
Venue Manager Joel Thompson said the upgrade is helping more people safely access and utilise the pool.
“Having the portable steps has significantly improved safe entry points on both sides of the shallow pool area,” Joel said.
“This allows us to use the space more efficiently during peak times, supporting our GOswim programs for infants and young children, as well as older adults who regularly use the pool for low impact programs, where safe and comfortable entry to the water is essential for participation.”

For regular patron Lynda Hultgren, the difference has been immediate.
“The pool steps are fabulous, using them to enter and exit the pool relieves the stress on my arms and wrists. I no longer need to jump up onto the side of the pool to get out.”
Others in the community are seeing similar benefits, particularly those managing injuries or mobility challenges.
“Absolutely wonderful. I struggle with a sore shoulder and they give me much better ease of access,” said Julie Kay.
“I think it’s great that the pool steps are now used. It makes life much easier when getting in and out of the pool,” added Bedelia Walker.
It’s a simple change, but one driven by the Jack Hort team to make it easier for more people to access the pool, take part in programs and support their health, wellbeing and connection to the community.
