Wai Ariki’s culturally, architecturally, experiential and beautiful space has picked up a plethora of awards, including Best New Spa at the 2023 Spa and Wellness Awards, receiving three prestigious accolades at the Designers Institute Awards and Qualmark’s highest accreditation.
Te ao Māori which influences the physical design of the building, its unique spa and wellness experiences and authentic manaakitanga – the centuries-old and internationally-renowned Ngāti Whakaue concept of welcoming manuhiri (visitors).
Rameka Alexander-Tu’inukuafe and Saul Roberts offer a unique Māori perspective on RCG’s Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa in Rotorua, paying homage to Ngāti Whakaue and the significance of the land.
Wai Ariki, managed by Belgravia Leisure, was commissioned by Pukeroa Lakefront Holdings in 2012 with a vision for a spa grounded in Ngāti Whakaue healing practices. Opened in 2023, Wai Ariki features a distinct architectural design inspired by the Te Arawa waka, incorporating traditional elements like carved pou whenua and turapa woven tukutuku panels.






The spa experience is infused with local scents and includes indigenous well-being treatments. ‘Wai Ariki symbolises Māori architecture and indigenous excellence’, urging the architectural community to deepen its understanding of Māori knowledge and culture. Continue reading in ArchitectureNow.
