A group of kangaroos has caused quite a stir at Lake Wivenhoe Campground in the west of Brisbane. They unknowingly became overnight internet sensations and racked up millions of views across the globe!
As highlighted by a national story on 10 News First, what began as a camping trip quickly transformed into a spectacle as kangaroos brawled, making for an interesting atmosphere at the campground.
Captured on video by camper Georgia O’Brien and her fiancé, the footage, which has since gone viral on social media platform TikTok, depicts the kangaroos hopping, punching, and growling at each other, with tents and tables becoming collateral damage in their spirited brawl.
As the video gained momentum online, it became apparent that the kangaroo ruckus wasn’t just a local affair—it had captured the attention of audiences worldwide. With over 15 million views, 1.5 million likes and 400,000 shares, the video showcased the unexpected chaos and provided a glimpse into the quirks of Australian wildlife to viewers across the globe.
Reflecting on the viral video, Georgia O’Brien shared with 10 News First, “It’s quite crazy how much of a reach social media has in America, Europe and England. They don’t see that type of stuff every day. So, it’s great to, I guess, showcase a little bit of Australia and what we see sometimes day to day.”
While the campground is known for offering visitors a serene retreat amoungst nature, the kangaroo brawl added an unexpected twist to the experience, highlighting the diverse and sometimes unpredictable nature of Australian wildlife.
Lake Wivenhoe is a haven for those who enjoy water-based recreation, particularly for kayaking and canoeing. The water is very calm due to the lack of powered boats, which makes for an enjoyable, relaxing experience or a spot of fishing.
