Chip, a familiar face at Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre, is chasing his dream of becoming a Learn to Swim instructor. Chip has never let Down Syndrome get in the way of his passion for swimming, recently, he completed his courses to become an assistant instructor — a significant step towards his dream career!
Steph Barnes, the Aquatic Service Coordinator, shares Chip’s enthusiasm for his new role and notes his genuine passion for teaching. “Chip’s impact extends beyond the pool deck, with parents and guests praising his dedication and teaching style. His genuine passion for teaching shines through as he celebrates each child’s progress with high fives and encouragement,” Steph said.
Anna Barnes, the Head Squad Coach, expressed immense pride in Chip’s journey from swimmer to coach, stating, “I have been Chip’s swim squad coach for 10 years and now he is Coach Chip, his dream come true!
“I’m not sure whose smile is the biggest, Chips, the kids he works with or the rest of the team at Wollondilly Leisure Centre. We’re extremely proud and lucky to have Chip as a part of our team”, Anna explained.

Dr Jeff Walkley, CEO of Belgravia Foundation and National Disability and Diversity Manager for Belgravia Leisure, says, “Chip’s journey is a testament to the success of this approach, and we are proud to support him from afar as he fulfils his dream of becoming a Learn to Swim instructor.
“We would also like to thank the Department of Social Services and AUSTSWIM for their contribution to Chip’s journey through support from the ILC Social and Community Participation Grant. We are very excited to watch Chip grow and strive for his next career aspirations”, Jeff concluded.
