Keilor Public Golf Course is hosting a new Winter series for all juniors under the age of 18. The series will run from 29 April 2021 to 27 May 2021.
The Winter Short Course Challenge will see Juniors take to the course with a ‘Four Hole Competition’ designed to encourage and reward beginner to experienced junior golfers.
Teeing off as a pair or group of three, each are challenged as they make their way around the pre-selected four holes. With custom tees placed closer to the greens, the Juniors make strategic decisions based on club choice and distance to the greens. A majority of the Juniors participating have Golf Australia Handicaps and tee off from the men’s or ladies tees on any given day. The short course will provide Juniors with a new perspective to ‘teeing off’.
Through the series, the team at KPGC are encouraging Juniors to rely on their instincts and golf skills. Golf Programs Coordinator Mel Puli said, “We have amazing parents who love to caddy and the challenge is for the Junior Golfer to develop independent confidence and establishing their own play on the fairways.” The tee placement changes weekly, so it’s always a surprise for Juniors to see where they will tee off for the day.
Ten-year-old Junior Chase said, “It was lots of fun because I could use different clubs and had to think really hard about which one to use. Instead of asking Mum for help, I made my own decisions. I made lots of good choices and bad ones too! We laughed a lot and it was fun playing with a new friend.”
