Belgravia Leisure’s commitment to sustainability has seen significant results with a notable 45% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from electricity at the company’s head office in Bayswater, Victoria.
The journey began in 2019, with the latest data for 2023 reflecting a substantial drop from 234.6 tCO2e to 129.6 tCO2e. This accomplishment is attributed to a series of proactive measures and the implementation of innovative green initiatives.
One key strategy involved the installation of 100 kWh of solar power at Belgravia Leisure’s head office in August 2022. This clean energy source contributes to reducing our organisation’s reliance on conventional electricity.
The introduction of sensor lighting and LED lighting further enhanced energy efficiency whilst helping optimise lighting conditions based on occupancy, ensuring that energy is only consumed when needed.
Additionally, the integration of 24/7 timers on selected electrical plant equipment added another layer of efficiency by automating power usage during specified time frames, minimising waste and unnecessary consumption.
Potential future initiatives include the extension of the existing solar power system. By increasing the capacity of renewable energy generation, aiming to enhance its self-sufficiency and reliance on clean energy sources.
HVAC system upgrades are also on the horizon, representing a commitment to optimising energy consumption in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. These upgrades not only align with sustainability goals but also contribute to creating a more comfortable and efficient working environment.

Pictured are some Belgravia Leisure head office team members rolling up their sleeves for a ‘Clean Up Day’ organised by Alexia Morgan, Belgravia Leisure’s Head of Sustainability.
Alexia expressed immense satisfaction with the substantial reduction in GHG emissions. She emphasised that the data reflects the effectiveness of the environmental initiatives outlined in Belgravia Leisure’s 5-year sustainability strategy.
Alexia highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts, “To see these numbers reducing over time is very satisfying. This data demonstrates that our environmental initiatives, which form part of Belgravia Leisure’s 5-year sustainability strategy, are effective and are directly reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.”
The combination of energy reduction initiatives, investment in renewable energy sources and the continuous pursuit of innovative solutions are all steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
The ‘Green Team’ are a group of sustainability champions, with the aim of having at least one representative located at all Belgravia Leisure managed venues. The team’s efforts to minimise our carbon footprint include a range of energy reduction initiatives.
As the team explores additional initiatives, the positive impact on the environment, our communities and operational efficiency is expected to grow.
