Tom Duell, our Community Engagement Coordinator across Mornington Peninsula, brings a sense of community connection and a passion for positive change to his role.

Growing up on the back beach in Rye, Tom developed a profound connection with the ocean, finding self-expression through surfing. A touring musician since the age of 12, Tom achieved a significant milestone by signing with a record label and releasing two albums on vinyl.

Following studies in Audio Engineering, Journalism, Teaching and Psychology, Tom embarked on a professional journey that includes experience as a Mental Health Support Worker and roles within environmental and First Nations-led organisations.

Tom values honesty, equality and passion which shape his interactions and work. He also values his close-knit family, friends and golden retriever, Merlin.

Tom’s deep connection to the Mornington Peninsula community led him to embrace the role of Community Engagement Coordinator with Belgravia Leisure. Seeing it as an opportunity to positively influence his home community, Tom finds the role aligns seamlessly with his passions and values.

Tom appreciates the freedom to shape his future and effect meaningful change. “A big shoutout to Miranda Doherty, who has shown me the ropes and made my first couple of months with Belgravia Leisure a great time. To me, the biggest highlight has been meeting everyone in the organisation and having the opportunity to connect and partner with groups who are doing wonderful things in the area. The overall experience so far has been very warm and welcoming, which is a special thing to have in such a big organisation.

When asked about his future, Tom says, “As long as I’m growing, learning and staying happy, then I really don’t mind where I am in the next five years. Obviously, I want to strive to be the best at what I do. If I’m making change on a larger scale to people and underrepresented/disadvantaged communities, that would be a pretty good place to be.”
