In a significant step towards achieving our sustainability goals here at Belgravia Leisure, our headquarters in Bayswater are now operating with 100% renewable electricity.
Thanks to a series of proactive measures and the implementation of innovative green initiatives, including the use of solar panels as well as the purchase of grid electricity as green power, this outstanding achievement has been a goal on the horizon for more than two years.
Led by our sustainability guru and Business Improvement Manager, Alexia Morgan, the journey for the Bayswater headquarters to become less reliant on conventional electricity began back in 2019. By 2022, 100 kWh of solar power was installed on the building, and by 2023, there had been a 45% reduction in emissions thanks to a series of proactive measures and the implementation of innovative green initiatives. Today, the building operates on green energy alone.
The introduction of sensor lighting and LED lighting further enhanced energy efficiency whilst helping optimise lighting conditions based on occupancy, ensuring that energy is only consumed when needed.
Additionally, the integration of 24/7 timers on selected electrical plant equipment added another layer of efficiency by automating power usage during specified time frames, minimising waste and unnecessary consumption.
Belgravia Leisure’s Head office provides support to all Belgravia Leisure sites including payroll, finance and procurement, and Belgravia Leisure staff on site take sustainability seriously. Staff have participated in clean up days, tree planting days and ensure they sort all waste into multiple recycling streams. Recent waste to land fill statistics at head office show recycling rates at Bayswater are 77%.
Alexia is thrilled at the accomplishment, and insists she is just getting started.
“I’m proud to say that by moving to green power, we have taken another important step in not only demonstrating our environmental commitment, but also doing our bit in the fight to prevent climate change. Every step, no matter how small is important, and in our effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our head office operations, I’m proud to say that we have already completed all relevant pillars to decarbonisation. These pillars include;
- Improve the efficiency of plant and infrastructure, included installation of LED lights, sensor lighting, installation of power saving devices, change of shift operating hours to reduce energy use, head office Green Team and Green noticeboard to assist with cultural change.
- Switch to clean energy – this included the installation of solar system and the purchase of green power.
- Have all plant and machinery operate on renewable energy (no gas on site)
