It takes more than a rainforest backdrop to be sustainable, it takes people who care enough to do the work.
The team behind Kipara Tropical Rainforest Retreat has achieved an exceptional 83% under the national Strive 4 Sustainability Scorecard, marking a significant milestone during a major refurbishment and expansion of the Airlie Beach retreat.
Alexia Morgan, General Manager Environment and Sustainability for Belgravia Leisure, said, “This result reflects the work happening behind the scenes at Kipara. It’s not just environmental systems, it’s how the team supports the local community, respects cultural heritage and builds sustainability into everyday decisions.”

The retreat recorded 85% for environmental impact and 82% for sustainable management, supported by a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan aligned with ISO 14001 standards.
“Every part of the score reflects the way our team shows up each day, from how we care for this rainforest setting to how we listen to guests and support our local community. For us, sustainability isn’t separate from our work, it’s embedded in it and this result tells us that approach is working,” said Park Manager, Brie Webb.

Amber Hughes QLD/NT/Nth NSW Business Operations Manager said, “The recognition comes during a period of significant change for Kipara, following a major refurbishment and expansion designed to better support both guests and our team. The retreat has grown to 67 rooms, added new cabins and villas, introduced pet-friendly accommodation, and completed a comprehensive refurbishment while retaining its relaxed, rainforest-immersed character.
“The focus throughout the upgrades was on creating spaces that work for people. The improvements allow our team to deliver a better experience without losing the simplicity and connection to nature that people visit Kipara for,” Amber said.
Beyond physical upgrades, the assessment noted Kipara’s strong approach to listening and responding to guest feedback, clear communication of environmental initiatives, and commitment to cultural respect through policies, training and a Reconciliation Action Plan.
