With a focus on learning and sustainability this month, we spoke with Alexia Morgan, the Group Manager of Business Improvement, about her team of eco-warriors who promote sustainability at the centres in which they work on a daily basis. In this article, she shares with us the good work that her Green Team are doing and how Belgravia employees can put their hands up to join the team.

What is the Green Team?

The Green team are people working at sites that have an interest in sustainability and the environment. I regularly message these people with hints, tips and information around sustainability and what they can do at their centre to help us achieve our sustainability goals. They in turn give me some great good news stories about what is happening at their site.

How many people are currently in the Team?

Currently I have 19 people, ranging from Area managers to casual customer service staff. Anyone can join and help. Working together will make us more effective.

Can you give some examples of the good work that the Team is doing?

Some of our sites are doing really innovative things from recycling bathers to installing solar energy panels and using reusable towels instead of disposable ones.

Why is it important for every centre to have a sustainability representative?

The Green Team works a bit like a local Workplace Health and Safety representative. They ensure that sustainability is front of mind with other team members on site. They work with me to implement new initiatives so that I can be confident the message for change is getting through and operational change is actually happening at sites.

What can Belgravia employees do to improve sustainability in their centres?

Load of things. Simple things like a 10% discount for bringing your keepcup to the café, to making sure the operations team are backwashing on filter pressure indicators, reduce paper consumption (go paperless – we hopefully will do this at Gunyamma in City of Sydney), put up Belgravia Leisure marketing hub created signage about shorter shower times.
