The hallowed fairways of Royal Melbourne Golf Club’s East Course played host to the 2022 Victorian ‘Canadian’ Foursomes Championships, Bob Shearer Shield on July 19.
The names of winners placed on the shield encompass the tradition and commitment to golf of PGA of Australia Life Member and Australian Open Champion, Bob Shearer.
With his recent passing in January of this year, Shearer is remembered as one of Australia’s most loved professional golfers on national and international fairways. With a career spanning four decades, winning the coveted shield adds a sense of humbleness for the players with hopes to make the great Shearer proud.
As Yarrambat Park Golf Course’s PGA Professional Brock Gillard and Assistant PGA Professional, Aaron Attwell stepped up to the first tee, the surrounds of Royal Melbourne were familiar with typical Melbourne Winter conditions.
PGA Professional, Brock Gillard said, “It was great to be able to tough out the rainy, cold conditions and hit quality shots for 18 holes.”
Playing partner, Assistant PGA Professional, Aaron Attwell said, “For the two of us to secure a win at a tough golf course, against such a strong field, showed our golf game on the day was really on song.”
With the final holes in sight, Gillard and Attwell sat comfortably with a lead. Gillard said, “I knew we were around the number and we just needed to finish strong to have a chance.”
With the final hole sunk, the realisation of winning the round hit home with the Yarrambat boys. “After our last putt had dropped, we knew we would be a chance to be sitting atop the leaderboard, but had a nervous wait to hear the final results,” said Attwell.
“It’s great to be a part of such prestigious history, we are going to be able to look back and see our names next to some of the greats,” said Gillard.
