To support remote communities, enhance water safety and foster a love for swimming, Belgravia Leisure has once again extended its support by offering complimentary swimming lessons to the Fairlie and Twizel communities in New Zealand’s South Island.
This initiative comes as part of our ongoing commitment to providing accessible aquatic education to all, regardless of geographical location or financial means.
In Twizel, access to structured swimming lessons has been non-existent due to its remote location. Recognising this gap, the team initiated a five-day intensive Swim Tangaroa program, provided at no cost to students.
We take pride in offering the Swim Tangaroa program at Fairlie and Twizel Pools, ensuring that the community receives aquatic education. The program is designed to engage students with a fun, activity-based style of learning.
Behind the scenes, Irene Smith, our Operations Manager for New Zealand, organises the logistical aspects to ensure smooth operations.
Meanwhile, Lisa Hirini, Venue Manager of Franklin Pool and Leisure, Sandra-Dee Nepia-Te Morenga, also from Franklin and Isabella (Izzy) Piggin from Mt Albert Aquatic Centre were on-site, lending their expertise to ensure the program’s success.
Given New Zealand’s plethora of water bodies central to recreational activities and daily life, swimming proficiency is not just a skill but a lifesaving skill that students will have for life!
Irene says, “Through these lessons, Belgravia Leisure equips students, especially children, with the knowledge and confidence to navigate water environments safely.
“At Twizel Pool, where recent swimming lessons concluded for the year, we saw over 130 children enrolled, eager to learn and have fun. At Fairlie Pool, we had a more intimate group as the community has a swim school, but 40 eager students seized the opportunity.
“The increase in interest underscores the community’s enthusiasm for these kinds of initiatives and the importance of ongoing support in remote areas where resources may be scarce,” Irene explained.
Beyond enhancing water safety, these swimming lessons also promote physical activity, social interaction and personal development. Participants not only learn essential swimming techniques but also engage in physical movement and interact with their peers.
As the program continues to positively impact the lives of Fairlie and Twizel communities, we remain committed to supporting our communities in staying active and connected while ensuring water safety, regardless of physical ability, financial capacity, cultural background, or stage of life.
