Aquarena Aquatic Centre was recently recognised in council publication Manningham Matters as the first leisure facility in Australia to have a Mental Health First Aider on site during all operating hours.
The article states:
“This move recognises the need to provide assistance to those in our community who are living with a mental health condition and ensures the centre can confidently provide the correct support to users of the centre.
When someone is having a mental health crisis, they could be having a panic attack, experiencing withdrawal, feeling suicidal, reacting to relationship issues, having a psychotic episode, or a mix of these symptoms. Mental Health First Aid can provide immediate assistance.
Aquarena is also proud to be working with the Belgravia Foundation to offer the Take Charge Program, a free referral-based program to help those with a mental health condition engage in 60 days of exercise at a leisure centre, followed by a negotiated co-contribution based on an individual’s financial situation for ongoing access to the centre’s facilities.”
