This World Drowning Prevention Day, Belgravia Leisure is celebrating a remarkable achievement with a 50% reduction in critical incidents requiring lifesaving first aid across their aquatic facilities.
In the lead-up to this significant day, we are thrilled to announce that compared to FY24, the company has seen a dramatic drop in major incidents, highlighting the relentless efforts and dedication of our teams behind the scenes.
Scott Vanderheyden, Group Work Health and Safety Manager, attributes this critical reduction to the company by implementing leading training and methodologies that have resulted in the team’s unwavering commitment to safety.
“A key driver has certainly been the team working together to embed the Belgravia Leisure developed ‘Triple A’s for Aquatic Safety’ methodology into our everyday work life,” said Vanderheyden.
“The Triple A’s; being alert, aware and active is a strategy implemented to empower our team of Lifeguards and Duty Managers to remained focused and attentive while on pool deck supervising the community – and we are certainly seeing the implementation of this initiative pay off.
“Another factor is no doubt the development of an industry first, centralised, aquatic safety team within the Belgravia Leisure support function which has allowed us to standardise how we manage aquatic risk and minimise the risk of incident within our venues,” continued Vanderheyden.
“We’ve also invested in centrally developed additional resources to provide our lifeguards and swim teachers with appropriate knowledge, skills and training, ultimately resulting in our venues being more educated and compliant.”

This investment in safety is evident across the country, with Belgravia Leisure recognised as a leader in safety and compliance. The company boasts an impressive average GSPO score of 92.9% in Australia (compared to the industry average of 79%) and 100% Poolsafe accreditation in New Zealand, demonstrating our commitment to operating at best practice standards.

In May 2025, the company was also honoured with the prestigious President’s Award by Royal Life Saving NSW, recognising their outstanding impact on water safety, as well as community inclusion.
Belgravia Leisure is going blue this World Drowning Prevention Day

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death globally for children and young people aged 1-24 years. Globally, more than 300,000 people lose their lives to drowning every year. In Australia hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning every year.
World Drowning Prevention Day, celebrated on July 25th each year, aims to bring people together to eliminate drowning and empower communities to be safe around water.
Over 50 Belgravia Leisure aquatic facilities will be working with Royal Life Saving Society Australia this World Drowning Prevention Day to ‘go blue’ and shine a spotlight on the fact that “anyone can drown, no one should”.
