On a regular Monday evening in July, the Yawa Aquatic Centre team’s lifesaving skills and communication were put to the test when young patron Austin suffered a serious medical episode while exercising in the gym.
The Yawa team sprang into action to save his life, and while awaiting paramedics, the gym floor was promptly evacuated and the first, second and third responders coordinated seamlessly.
The team applied lifesaving first aid and CPR, skills which are regularly practiced during quarterly in-service training sessions.
“Our team’s swift response and extensive training were critical in this emergency,” said Dan Andrews, Venue Manager at Yawa.
“The team’s calm demeanor, clear and effective communication was key,” Dan said.
“The team remained calm, communicated effectively and were very supportive of each other. They were aided by a venue radio system that played a crucial role in the swift and effective response. It meant the team knew the exact location of the incident, minimising any delay in the response.”
Ambulance Victoria commended the team’s early intervention, stating it “undoubtedly saved Austin’s life”.
This successful outcome highlights the extensive ongoing training that Yawa invests in, including regular emergency drills and staff qualification checks. “Post-incident, we’ve had several check-ins as a group to help support each other. The incident has not only reinforced the team’s confidence but also fostered a closer-knit, supportive environment among the team”, said Dan.
“Whilst a confronting scenario, this team deserve recognition for their preparation and responsiveness in emergencies. I’m extremely proud of their efforts,” Dan concluded.
On August 22, Austin and his family returned to Yawa to express their thanks. Austin conveyed his deep appreciation for the team’s efforts and looks forward to resuming his training when he receives the all-clear.
This event highlights the importance of preparedness and training in ensuring safety and saving lives. We’re pleased with the outcome and incredibly proud of the team’s efforts—well done team Yawa!
