The Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre’s official opening in Mount Gambier occurred today, March 16, 2023. The multi-purpose venue is a local community hub for sports, events, conventions, and catering.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including Minister King and Minister Scriven, along with Mayor Martin and CEO of the City of Mount Gambier, Sarah Philpott. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was a highlight of the day, officiated by the Federal, State and Local Ministers and the Mayor.
The event started at 9:00am with Mayor Martin, Sarah Philpott, and Barbara Cernovskis greeting guests. The proceedings began at 10:30am with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Penny Bonney and a Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Doug Nicholls. Sarah Philpott then introduced the Mayor of Mount Gambier, who presented Minister King, followed by Minister Scriven.



Guests were then invited to join a tour of the facility, led by Mayor Martin, Sarah Philpott, and Barbara Cernovskis. The tour concluded at the function room upstairs, where the official proceedings were wrapped up with the cutting of the cake and a networking lunch.
The afternoon session commenced at 2:45 pm with Sarah Philpott welcoming community guests and inviting them to take their seats in the Convention Hall. Mayor Martin then gave a speech, followed by an introduction to Katrina Webb, OAM, who delivered a presentation.
South Australia State Manager Catherine Foreman said, “We are thrilled to see the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre come to life and become a community hub for sports, events, and conventions. This multipurpose venue will be a cultural landmark for Mount Gambier and showcase the city’s potential as a host city. I look forward to seeing this centre’s opportunities for the community and beyond come to life.”
