What a year it’s been! Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa recently celebrated its first anniversary, marking an incredible year packed with achievements that have truly put Wai Ariki on the map as THE destination for cultural wellness and breathtaking architecture.
In just twelve months, the Rotorua-based hot springs and spa, deeply rooted in Māori culture and Ngāti Whakaue healing traditions, has become a port of call for guests from all over the world looking for unique wellness experiences. Blending the richness of Te Ao Māori (the Māori worldview) with modern luxury, guests have been thrilled with all Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa has offered over the past year, which is reflected in guest feedback with an impressive 4.7 out of 5 rating in Google Reviews.
But it’s not just our guests who think the venue is amazing. Wai Ariki has snagged a finalist spot in the World Architecture Awards and won multiple prestigious titles, including the 2024 Waikato & Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards for Commercial Architecture and being named Best New Spa at the 2023 Spa and Wellness Awards.
The recognition didn’t stop there. The truly distinctive development also received three accolades at the Designers Institute Awards and along the way earned Qualmark Gold, Qualmarks’s highest accreditation. Wai Ariki has been featured in top publications like ArchitectureNow and Kia Ora Magazine.
Although they’re amazing, it’s not all about the awards and features.
Wai Ariki has been honoured to host some major events that celebrate wellness and culture, including Rotorua’s official 2024 Waitangi Day celebration (pictured left) and the Indigenous Women Lead and Inspire Summit.
These events have brought together some of the most inspiring voices in culture, wellness and leadership.
Wai Ariki has also had the privilege of hosting some incredible guests from the local community but also around the world—let’s not forget the star-studded guest list! Wai Ariki had the pleasure of welcoming New Zealand’s very own Black Ferns, Hollywood superstar Jason Momoa and the multi-talented Stan Walker.
We have opened our doors to the Native Nations group and Miss Charm New Zealand, Georgia Waddington. Plus, recently supported NDURO Events’ Run the Forest because giving back to our community is at the heart of what we do.
As we look back on this incredible first year, we want to acknowledge our partners, guests and team members. You’ve all been a huge part of the journey and we can’t wait to see what the future holds as we continue to share the best of cultural wellness with our manuhiri (visitors) from around the world.

“There are so many of you who have contributed to our early successes and we thank you all. We’re excited to keep building these relationships in the years ahead as we continue to share our unique blend of culture and wellness,” says Debbie Robertson, General Manager at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa.
“Our first year has been nothing short of remarkable. From architectural accolades to unforgettable events, we’re so grateful for the support of our community and can’t wait to keep sharing our offerings with the world,” Debbie concluded.
