In December 2022, in light of critical incidents within the industry, the Safety Team, in collaboration with our Senior Leadership Team (SLT), developed the Belgravia methodology and strategy for aquatic supervision with the Triple A’s for Aquatic Safety.
This methodology was developed on the premise of our lifeguards maintaining the following mantra – Be Alert, Be Aware, Be Active – with the strategy to further educate and coach our lifeguards to maintain active supervision and vigilance in what was predicted to be a busy and eventful summer.
With the implementation of the Aquatic Safety team, led by Scott Vanderheyden, National Aquatic Safety Manager, the Triple A’s for Aquatic Safety became a living and breathing methodology that was redistributed to our venues on a quarterly basis with a new theme and focus based on what is happening within the organisation, including vulnerable swimmers, supervision challenges such as blind spots and glare, hypoxic and breath-holding activities with the latest version targeting parental supervision.
To celebrate the industry-leading internal education initiative, the Safety Team invited all venues to participate in creating a video with their teams to demonstrate how the Triple A’s have been embedded into the culture within the venue with the opportunity to win $1000 towards staff engagement initiatives at their venue!
From this, we had eight amazing submissions from our leisure venues listed below.
- Lawnton Aquatic Centre – QLD
- Nuriootpa War Memorial Swimming Pool – SA
- Whitlam Leisure Centre – NSW
- Keilor East Leisure Centre – VIC (Video 1, Video 2, Video 3)
- Prince Alfred Park Pool – NSW
- Warragamba Swimming Pool – NSW
- Waikerie Swimming Pool – SA
- YAWA Leisure Centre – VIC
There could only be one winner — a special shout out to the Keilor East Leisure Centre team, led by Penny Palman and Lauren Shaw, who showed that their team live and breathes the Triple A’s every day.
As we continue to prioritise safety and innovation the success of this initiative serves as a testament to the collective effort and dedication of the Belgravia family.
