Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre has proudly announced Cassandra Gill’s appointment to a pivotal customer service and administration role. Cassandra, affectionately known as Cassie, is breaking barriers as a local woman with an intellectual disability, bringing not only her warm demeanour but also a Certificate 3 in Business Administration to her position.
Cassie’s journey to employment began at Wulanda’s Community Network Forum in June 2023 where local organisations, community leaders and City of Mount Gambier representatives collaborated to ensure inclusivity in the venue.
It was through this forum that the opportunity for employment arose, initiated by Belgravia Leisure and Belgravia Foundation. With support from the local employment agency WDE Works, Cassie underwent a rigorous interview process, impressing Venue Manager Heidi Gajic with her dedication and charm.

Heidi describes that having Cassie as part of the team has been a positive experience, not just for the Wulanda Team but also our members and guests who are greeted with her infectious smile as she checks them in a reception or handles enquiries.
“Her commitment and dedication to ongoing learning and hard work have already been huge assets to all at Wulanda.”
In 2023, we took our Workforce Diversification project to new heights with the introduction of the Belgravia Census. Through this initiative, we gained valuable insights into our workforce composition, uncovering that 11.2% of our employees across Australia are living with disabilities. Notably, conditions such as ADHD and Autism emerged as the most prevalent.
These findings have become the basis for ongoing efforts to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all team members. It underscores the importance of providing necessary support and accommodations to ensure an accessible work environment for everyone.

When asked about her new role, Cassie explained how much she loves Wulanda, “I’m so grateful for the opportunity for employment here at Wulanda.
“I look forward to coming in and working with the team and my favourite day is Saturday morning as it is busy and I get to meet all the young enthusiastic swimmers coming in for swimming lessons.”
This initiative not only benefits individuals like Cassie but also enriches the entire community by promoting diversity and equality in the workplace. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication to diversity, Cassie has not only found a fulfilling role but has also enriched the entire Wulanda community with her infectious spirit and unwavering commitment.
As we continue to embrace diversity and create opportunities for all, Cassie’s story reminds us that every individual has unique talents to contribute and deserves a chance to shine. In celebrating Cassie’s success, we reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
