Every year on December 3rd, the world comes together to observe International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD). This day is dedicated to increasing awareness, understanding and inclusion of individuals living with disabilities, celebrating their accomplishments and acknowledging their valuable contributions.
Belgravia Leisure venues joined hands with their communities and Council partners to mark this important day. Let’s explore some of our team’s celebrations across the country.
At Thomastown Recreation & Aquatic Centre (TRAC), the “We are the Champions” celebration unfolded on the 5th of December 2023. Presented in collaboration with Thomastown Neighbourhood House, City of Whittlesea and Active Whittlesea (Belgravia Leisure), this thematic festival brought the community together with the iconic anthem “We are the Champions” by Queen.
The event featured an array of entertaining performances, including the “Bust-A-Move” dance troupe, LifeSkills “The Revolutions Choir,” and Anna Lumb’s “Hula Hooper Extravaganza.” Information stalls from 14 local partner agencies added to the festivity, providing valuable connections, resources and giveaways.
TRAC’s own employee “King” Arthur Kyriazopoulos, an individual with remarkable abilities, served as the MC, adding a personal touch to the celebration. The event, supported by local agencies and facilitated by dedicated individuals, saw approximately 135 champions coming together to enjoy a day of inclusivity and camaraderie.
An agency called MarbleCare expressed their gratitude, Prashesh says, “It was an honour and a privilege to be a part of such a meaningful gathering. The experience has left an indelible mark on me personally, inspiring a renewed sense of purpose and dedication to serving those in need within our society.”
For Active Whittlesea venues, this celebration was more than an event—it was a valuable opportunity to foster awareness among staff about disability and initiate conversations about creating more inclusive environments.
Singleton Heights Sports Centre hosted a Trivia Lunch in conjunction with Singleton Council and Belgravia Foundation as part of their Access Summer Festival. The event saw 75 enthusiastic participants competing in six rounds of mixed trivia, accompanied by morning tea/lunch. The success of the event, marked by positive feedback, positions it to become an annual tradition.
The donations collected during the event will support opportunities for community members with disabilities to participate in the Access Summer Festival.
Singleton Council, supporting various events for the Access Summer Festival, expressed gratitude to everyone who participated, making the Trivia Day a noteworthy success.
Wollondilly Shire Council shared the amazing work that the Wollondilly Community Leisure Centre does to support an inclusive and accessible space that the entire community can utilise and flourish in.
The video created not only showcases the venue’s commitment to accessibility but also recognises users and employees with disabilities and the outstanding staff culture.

At Michael Clarke Recreation Centre (MCRC), International Day of People with Disability was a resounding success. Through a longstanding relationship MCRC partnered with George and Marco from Heros with Ability to host a special event for IDPwD. The set-up included multiple sports stations and ambassadors Nathan and Ivan Cleary, who were present to meet and greet attendees.
At Belgravia Leisure, we are committed to creating environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can come together, celebrate accomplishments and foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity. As the communities unite after celebrating International Day of People with Disability, the message is clear: abilities shine brightest when celebrated together.
