When Merelyn first joined Dayboro Pool & Gym in September 2025, she was using a walking stick and spent her time walking in the pool rather than swimming. Today, she is completing an impressive 40 laps each session, rain, hail or shine.
Thanks to a City of Moreton Bay Council upgrade that introduced walk-in stairs, Merelyn attends the pool at least five days a week and has continued to build her strength and confidence.
Prior to this improvement, access was limited to ladders or a hoist for people with reduced mobility. The upgrade comes as more Australians report using exercise to manage chronic illness.

In 2026, the Australian Government, Department of Health, Disability and Ageing state that roughly 3 in 5 Australians (15.4 million) are living with at least one chronic condition.
Michelle Newell, Venue Manager at Dayboro Pool & Gym is thrilled to see Merelyn’s progress. She said:
“Merelyn is nothing short of incredible. Watching her health transformation has been an absolute privilege and shows that swimming really is for everyone.”
