‘Low Sensory Hours’ have been introduced across three Belgravia Leisure managed venues on the Mornington Peninsula, including Yawa Aquatic Centre, Pelican Park Recreation Centre and Civic Reserve Recreation Centre.
This initiative aims to cater to individuals who experience sensitivity to light and sound, providing them with a safe and supportive space to enjoy leisure experiences.
During these dedicated times, sensory stimuli will be minimised to create a more inclusive environment for all members and guests. Music will be turned off, lights will be dimmed where possible, hand dryers will be deactivated and screens within the Health Club areas will be switched off.
Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. One member, Briony said, “It’s great to have something that is inclusive for all members.” Another member, Ethan, who utilises the recovery sessions after his soccer matches, expressed his appreciation for the quiet environment, “I enjoy the quiet time as it adds to my recovery.”
Charlotte, a member who was recently diagnosed with Autism, found peace in the sessions and suggested a small adjustment, “I really enjoy the session and it would be good if I could request music to be turned down at other times as well.”
Tom Duell, Community Engagement and Inclusion Coordinator for the Mornington Peninsula venues explained that by reducing visual and auditory stimulation, the venues hope to create a more accessible environment for families, carers and individuals affected by sensory sensitivity.
“We are committed to making our venues welcoming and inclusive for everyone in the community,” said Tom. “Our Low Sensory Hour is a step towards ensuring that individuals with sensory sensitivities can enjoy our facilities comfortably and without barriers.
“We encourage all members and guests to be respectful and supportive during Low Sensory Hour, recognising it as a designated time and place for individuals to engage with the facilities safely,” Tom concluded.
