Six months ago, Circular Head local John Vincent Rose arrived at Smithton Wellbeing Indoor Recreation & Leisure (SWIRL) seeking relief from chronic lower back pain, which prevented him from walking independently. John was using a wheelchair and unable to walk from the car park to the entrance.
Today, thanks to regular sessions in the pool, John is walking unassisted and has regained the confidence to return to the activities he loves – like road trips in his caravan.
A life-changing journey of recovery in the water
Since January 2026, John has attended SWIRL Tasmania five times a week, spending an hour at a time floating and exercising in the deep end of the pool with his wife.
Little did John know that a way to manage persistent pain would soon kickstart a transformative health and wellbeing journey.
“When I first came to the pool, I was in a wheelchair. Now, with my walker, I can move on my own without pain,” said John.
“I am amazed at how much swimming at SWIRL has helped me and continues to do so. I wouldn’t be walking right now if not for my swim sessions.”
John said the improvements to his mobility and overall health have exceeded his expectations:
“I only need my walker for long distances, my doctor has halved my pain meds and I no longer need to see a physio. My experience has been truly life changing.”
Restoring independence and confidence

For John, the physical benefits of swimming have been matched by a renewed sense of optimism and independence.
“When the pain was severe all the time, I thought: ‘This is my future now’.
“I love going away in my caravan and I thought I would never get the chance again,” he added.
Through his commitment to regular swimming and the support of the SWIRL team, John has been able to return to daily life without pain.
Venue Manager Herath Pitawala said John’s progress demonstrates the potential impact of regular swimming.
“John is a fantastic example of how aquatic exercise can support people to improve their mobility, confidence and overall wellbeing. We are incredibly proud to see the progress he has made over the past six months and grateful to be part of his recovery journey.”

Building community connections through exercise
Alongside the physical improvements, John has also found a strong sense of community at SWIRL Tasmania.
“All the classes provided here are first class – I’ve made so many new friends.
“You cannot put a price on health and wellbeing – you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain,” John concluded.
Supporting health and wellbeing in Circular Head
SWIRL Tasmania aims to provide residents with access to low-impact exercise in a warm-water environment designed to support rehabilitation, mobility and wellbeing outcomes.
The buoyancy of water can help reduce pressure on joints and muscles while supporting freedom of movement, making casual swimming an accessible option for people recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions or mobility challenges, or looking to improve their overall quality of life.
