This month’s edition of B-Informed is themed ‘Our Leadership’. As leaders in the health and leisure industry, we’re aware that it’s not only ‘what’ we do that’s important, but ‘how’ we do it. Delivering our goal is the responsibility of every team member at Belgravia, no matter what role we have, or where we work within the organisation.
Succeed and Grow (S&G) is Belgravia Leisure’s formal performance management system. The program was put in place to help guide the performance of all participating team members within Belgravia Leisure to achieve our strategic objectives within the performance year.
How does S&G work?
The S&G Cycle is supported by an individual S&G Plan. This plan is tailored to an individual’s measurable targets to achieve company objectives for their role (Succeed) and a plan for their individual development (Grow).
There are three key phases in the S&G Cycle:
- Goal Setting
At the Goal Setting phase, you will develop your S&G Plan with your manager, setting targets for ‘WHAT” you can achieve and ‘HOW’ you can achieve it.
- Mid-year Review
Mid-year reviews are designed to check in on progress towards the targets in the Goal Setting phase.
- Year-end Review
Year-end reviews acknowledge and confirm your achievements against the S&G Plan. They will assess whether you achieved your ‘WHAT’ targets and ‘HOW’ you achieved them.
CASE STUDY – AQUARENA
We spoke with the team at Aquarena to find out how they have implemented Succeed and Grow at their facility to ensure that all team members are provided a roadmap towards career progression.
“At Aquarena, all of our team members complete regular team member Check-ins, where along with their manager they identify and discuss strengths, opportunities for improvement and career pathways,” Aylie Spence, Centre Manager at Aquarena told us.
“In addition to this, our leadership team take part in the Succeed and Grow Cycle where a plan is created to ensure there is a road map toward career progression. One example of this was in March 2019 when our Centre Manager moved into a secondment role, presenting an opportunity for our Operations Manager to step into this role in an acting capacity.”
This was a true testament to the teamwork and staff development taking place at the centre as Aylie was quickly sent up to Mackay to open a new facility, and upon her return, she continued to work on a number of other projects. In total she was out of the centre for close to 3 months and during this time, staff had the opportunity to extend themselves beyond their regular roles. Most importantly, the centre continued to run at a high standard despite the temporary shuffling of roles.
“Further to this,” added Aylie, “in late 2019 when Bobby Savic, our Operations Manager had to take some time off from work, two of our team members who had expressed interest in learning broader areas of centre operations were able to jointly cover off on Bobby’s duties. This resulted in our Health and Fitness Manager and our Operations Coordinator at the time gaining valuable experience and insight into the Operations Manager role throughout this period. This in turn provided an opportunity for one of our Duty Managers to complete additional duties in support of the Operations Coordinator. Experience was gained by all parties, now our Health and Fitness Manager is completing his Pool Operators Certificate.”
Succeed and Grow is an opportunity for all team members to put their hands up for career progression and development. Belgravia Leisure strongly believes that our people are our best asset and we continue to strive for ways to invest in the training and development of our teams because every single one of us contributes towards being leaders in the industry.
