This Exercise Right Month, Belgravia Leisure is sharing the powerful story of Rob Stubbs, Health Club Coordinator at Splash Devonport in Tasmania to highlight the importance of regular exercise in supporting community health, both physically and mentally.
After more than 30 years in the fitness industry, Rob considered himself “indestructible” and rarely visited the doctor. However, in January 2025, a rare medical appointment led to scans and a subsequent cancer diagnosis. Following a biopsy and further investigations, Rob underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Through reintroduction to regular exercise, Rob is on the road to recovery.

When fitness meets the unexpected
Cancer treatment took a significant toll on Rob’s, physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. At his lowest point, Rob was unable to eat and required tube feeding, experiencing substantial changes to his body during treatment.
Despite feeling like he was “failing,” health professionals consistently reassured him that, given his fitness background, he was responding exceptionally well compared to most patients.
In September 2025, Rob received the “all clear”, though doctors advised it could take 12 to 24 months to return to his previous physical capacity and strength.

Just one month later, Rob gradually reintroduced regular exercise. While nowhere near his previous training levels, he focused on consistency and routine, combining cardiovascular and resistance training as well as group fitness classes in a way that supported his recovery.
“Exercise helped me recover physically, it kept me grounded mentally,” Rob said. “Knowing my body so well meant I could tell something wasn’t right and during treatment and recovery, getting back into regular exercise gave me purpose, structure and confidence again.”
In May 2026, nearly six months post treatment, Rob has reestablished a regular exercise routine and continues to rebuild strength and confidence.
The role of movement in recovery and wellbeing
Rob strongly believes that regular exercise not only helps people better understand their bodies, but also plays a crucial role in managing the mental and physical impacts of illness, treatment and recovery. His story highlights how important movement and exercise are in returning to pre-diagnosis physical capability and increasing overall quality of life.
