Whitlam Leisure Centre has launched AI-powered drowning detection technology, strengthening swimmer safety at one of Liverpool’s key community aquatic venues.
The Lynxight drowning detection system has been funded and led by Belgravia Leisure, in partnership with Liverpool City Council, to support safer and more enjoyable swimming experiences for the local community.
Belgravia Leisure takes responsibility for creating and maintaining safe aquatic environments for both team members and guests. This is supported by proactive supervision, a strong safety culture, ISO accredited systems, regular auditing and emergency preparedness that exceed industry standards. Belgravia Leisure complies with Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations, with the safety of children remaining a priority across all venues.
The technology works with standard pool security cameras and uses artificial intelligence to analyse swimmer behaviour in real time. When a swimmer shows signs of distress or potential risk, the system can send alerts to lifeguards through smartwatches and workstation notifications, helping teams identify and respond to incidents sooner.
Scott Vanderheyden, General Manager Health and Safety at Belgravia Leisure, said the system is designed to assist lifeguards, not replace them.
“Belgravia Leisure has invested in the implementation of the Lynxight drowning detection system to better support our lifeguards and the Liverpool community,” Scott said.
“This system is designed to support lifeguard supervision, not replace lifeguards and will ensure lifeguards are aware of any swimmers in distress before it becomes critical.”
Belgravia Leisure has already seen the technology assist teams in a live aquatic environment, with the system providing an alert to a lifeguard at Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre after identifying a swimmer in distress. The alert supported the team’s response and resulted in a successful rescue.
Whitlam Leisure Centre offers aquatic programs, health and fitness services, learn to swim, recreational swimming and community access. The implementation of Lynxight reflects Belgravia Leisure’s ongoing focus on practical innovation, risk prevention and strengthening the tools available to frontline aquatic teams.
Whitlam Leisure Centre team members took part in training ahead of the Lynxight system going live. The session included a pool deck walkthrough and an overview of how the technology identifies potential risks and sends real-time alerts to support lifeguard response.

Lynxight is used by pool operators around the world to support lifeguarded aquatic environments, helping teams detect potential risks earlier, pinpoint where support may be needed and reduce blind spots across pool spaces.
