In an innovative collaboration stemming from the 2024 Community Network Forum, SWELL Palmerston has partnered with the Heart Foundation to launch Australia’s first-ever ‘aqua walking’ program as part of the Foundation’s Walking campaign.
This groundbreaking initiative, called Walking on Water, takes the principles of group walking into the refreshing environment of a swimming pool, combining fitness with fun while addressing joint and muscle issues.
The Heart Foundation’s Walking campaign is designed to encourage Australians to stay active and maintain heart health. Traditionally conducted in community spaces, the program’s latest iteration introduces a new dimension to exercise, helping participants remain active in the Northern Territory’s constant 30+ degree heat.

Walking on Water offers a low-impact alternative that’s ideal for individuals with joint or mobility challenges, making it accessible and enjoyable for all fitness levels.
“Not only does Walking on Water add an exciting variation to the Heart Foundation’s Walking campaign, but it also provides a greater range of motion for participants,” said Ashley Stephens, Centre Manager and Walk Organiser at SWELL.
“The program has quickly become a favourite among participants, particularly older community members looking for ways to stay fit. Weekly sessions are filled with enthusiasm, with some participants even organising their own sessions outside of the official program. By reducing the strain on joints and muscles, aqua walking opens the door to movements and exercises that were previously inaccessible to many,” Ashley continued.
“Our group loves trying new moves like lunges and jogging in the water, which they might not be able to do on land. It’s rewarding to see how this program is boosting confidence, fitness levels, and fostering friendships among our participants.”

The program’s success has been recognised at a community level, with the Heart Foundation’s Walking campaign being nominated for an Australia Day Award by the City of Palmerston. Ashley attended the ceremony on behalf of SWELL to celebrate this achievement.
