Summer has officially arrived, bringing with it a mix of unpredictable weather conditions, ranging from flooding and cyclones to extreme heat and thunderstorms. These variations pose unique challenges and, in certain instances, potential dangers for communities.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable summer season, consider the following tips:
Water Safety
Whether at the beach, by the river, around the lake, or enjoying a pool day, emphasise parental supervision. Remind parents and guardians to stay within arm’s reach of young children (0-5 years) and actively supervise older children to prevent aquatic injuries or fatalities.
Alcohol and Water Don’t Mix
If you’re responsible for supervising children or engaging in swimming activities, avoid consuming alcohol around water. Alcohol impairs decision-making skills and response times, increasing the risk of accidents.
Tree Inspection
Assess trees at work or home, particularly during high winds. Dead or damaged branches can easily break and pose a threat. Take the time to complete a tree inspection, seek advice from a certified arborist, and if in doubt, arrange to have the tree pruned, cabled, or (if suitable and permitted by Council) removed.
Hydration and Sun Protection
Stay hydrated and practice sun safety in hot and humid conditions. Dehydration and sunburn can occur easily. Consider the vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young, who may forget to stay hydrated and may need assistance in coping with the heat.
Snake Awareness
Be cautious of snakes, especially during hot weather when they are most active. Wear closed toe shoes, avoid walking in long grass and scrub when you can.

Stay Informed
Check the Bureau of Meteorology and know what the weather is doing in your part of Australia and New Zealand. Understanding weather-related risks early can allow time to plan, whether it be securing loose outside items before high winds hit or evacuating a location due to flood or fire. Every minute matters. Make checking the weather a part of your morning routine to stay informed!
