For many women and girls, stepping into a gym or sports environment can be daunting. Whether it’s juggling family responsibilities, lack of confidence, or simply feeling like they don’t belong, the barriers to getting active are real and often overlooked.
To help combat this, the Copper Coast Sport and Leisure Centre (CCSLC) in Kadina, South Australia, has partnered with Sonder to deliver the Play Our Way funding program. Funded through the Australian Government, the initiative is designed to empower women and girls to participate in sport and physical activity in a more inclusive, welcoming and supportive environment.
Giles Ellis, Venue Manager at CCSLC says that the partnership is focused on reducing barriers to participation, building confidence and fostering a genuine sense of belonging for women and girls in the Copper Coast community.
“We’re proud to partner with Sonder, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving health and wellbeing in South Australian communities. With the support of the Play Our Way grant, we’re working together to deliver programs that genuinely meet the needs of local women and girls. This initiative marks a meaningful step forward in promoting gender equity and supporting healthier, more active lifestyles across our region.”
Starting with a series of 10-week program blocks, the centre will roll out tailored offerings aimed at encouraging participation across different life stages:
- Mum Club: Designed for mothers with young children, this program makes the most of the centre’s on-site creche, allowing mums to prioritise their own health and fitness while their little ones are cared for.
- Teen Gym Girls: Led by local trainer Shauna Olds, this program supports girls aged 15–17 as they build confidence and learn how to navigate the gym in a comfortable, inclusive setting.
On women and girls getting involved in a fitness setting, Shauna Olds comments, “It’s hard stepping into a gym when you don’t feel like you belong. The StrongHER program is about creating a safe space where young women can grow together.”
Nicole Fergusson, CCSLC Gym Coordinator, said, “We have some amazing ideas and the potential to spark lasting change. Building a vibrant, healthy and strong network of women is so exciting. We’d also love to hear from the community if there are other opportunities we haven’t yet explored.”
These new programs reflect a broader national commitment to increasing female participation and leadership in sport and recreation. By fostering safe and supportive environments, the team and Play Our Way initiative are helping to shape a more equitable future in sport for all.
