If you’ve visited the Trust House Recreation Centre in Masterton recently, chances are you’ve seen the smiling face of Te Kapua Haira or, as he’s better known, TK.
TK was born and raised in Masterton and before taking up lifeguarding, followed a very different path, working as a chef around the country and pursuing his passion for cookery. A visit home turned into a turning point when a lifeguard at Trust House encouraged him to consider joining the team.
“He said I’d be good at it, and I just knew he was right. It was a big process, but I’m glad I pulled it off. I’ve been lifeguarding ever since and loving every second of it.”
Since joining the team in November 2023, TK has brought energy and a strong sense of community to his role as Duty Manager Lifeguard. Earlier this year, he proudly completed his New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics – Pool Lifeguard (Level 3).
One of TK’s proudest achievements so far? Building genuine connections with regular visitors to the centre.
“That’s what I love most, getting to know people. It gives me a bit of insight into their lives, which I find really interesting. The banter’s always great too, especially on a quiet day.”
His positive presence and willingness to take initiative have already made a mark. Over summer, TK introduced Masterton’s very first Manu Bombing Competition and despite limited time to plan, the event was a hit.
“It was awesome seeing the turnout and everyone connecting and enjoying themselves. I’m definitely keen to run another event, just with a bit more planning next time. It gave me a great idea of what I can do better moving forward,” TK said.
“Seeing TK grow into the role and build strong connections with our community has been amazing,” says Venue Manager Nikki Roud.
“TK has shown real initiative, especially with the Manu competition and it’s great to see him gaining confidence and developing professionally through on-the-job training. We couldn’t be prouder of TK and the work he’s doing to keep our pools safe, fun and welcoming for all. Ka pai, TK, keep up the great mahi!” Nikki concluded.
