Falls are a leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations and deaths in Australia, costing the health system an estimated more than $5 billion each year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. This highlights the need for preventative, community-based programs that support mobility and independence.
At Stromlo Leisure Centre in the ACT, that need is being addressed through a new Falls Prevention Class led by Physiotherapist Nimisha Gorasia, designed to support people of all ages, including those at risk of falls or recovering from injury, to build confidence and maintain independence.
Since starting with Belgravia Leisure in January 2026, Nimisha has led the development of the program, turning direct member feedback into an initiative that combines education, assessment and movement.
The idea was sparked during a member coffee club, where members shared a desire for more support around falls.
“With my background in aged care, that really resonated with me. Being able to respond to that need in a community setting felt really meaningful,” Nimisha said.

Venue Manager Samer Kamal said the program reflects a strong team approach within the venue, with a strong connection to the local community.
“Nimisha has done some amazing work to bring this idea to life, developing presentations, delivering a seminar, engaging members and completing initial assessments ahead of the program rollout in early March, with classes commencing mid-March.
“It’s been great to see our team get behind the initiative, supporting members and bringing a more proactive, preventative approach to health and wellbeing at Stromlo,” Samer said.

Leigh Whitaker said the Falls Prevention Program had already made a meaningful difference in her life.
“The Falls Prevention Program has been really beneficial for me. I live alone and travel around a lot, so anything that helps prevent a fall gives me real peace of mind. Nimisha is very personable and makes the sessions fun, which makes a big difference too,” Leigh said.

Originally from Kenya, Nimisha moved to Australia as an international student, studying Exercise and Sports Science in Melbourne before relocating to Canberra to complete a Masters in Physiotherapy.
“For me, it’s always been about having a deeper impact on people’s independence and quality of life. For every physiotherapist, every patient is a challenge, but when someone comes back and says they feel even 10% better, that’s a huge win,” Nimisha concluded.
The program runs in small groups of up to six participants, supporting a safe and personalised approach, with participants able to join a 12-week program as spaces become available. Due to strong early interest, additional sessions are already being explored, including a proposed Friday class to meet growing demand.
As demand continues to grow, the program reflects Belgravia Leisure’s focus on reducing barriers to care, ensuring more people can access the support they need to stay active, independent and well.
