Gary’s story is all the inspiration you need if you’re looking for motivation to put your health first this Men’s Health Week. His story is a powerful reminder that no matter your challenges, age or ability, it’s never too late to take charge of your wellbeing.

Every day, 61-year-old Gary shows up at SWELL Palmerston in the Northern Territory. After losing his right arm to bone cancer in 2021, Gary bounced back with determination.
Now, he’s not only back in the pool and gym, but he’s also often there three times a day! Enjoying group fitness classes, swimming laps and pushing limits that many wouldn’t attempt with two arms.
Men’s Health Week (9–15 June) is a powerful reminder that your health is your most important asset, no matter your age, ability or circumstances. Gary’s story is proof that with the right mindset and a bit of creativity, there are no excuses.
“Having a disability doesn’t mean you can’t lead a healthy, active life,” says Ashley Stephens, Venue Manager at SWELL.
“A few simple adaptations can make a world of difference. Gary isn’t just a regular member, he’s a real inspiration to others, not just because of what he’s overcome, but because of the effort and determination he brings every single day.”

Gary has created his own fitness tools, including a one–handed skipping rope and ab roller and gives every movement a go, from bicep curls to one-handed push-ups.
Gary says his motivation comes from a turning point early on, “I met another amputee not long after losing my arm and his ‘never give up’ attitude really stuck with me. Now I build my own fitness equipment and challenge myself in the gym.
Gary pictured using his one-armed skipping rope that he holds onto while jumping over a ball on a chain.
“To anyone out there wanting to focus on your health, don’t think twice, just do it. No matter what challenges you’ve got, there’s always some form of activity you can do. The more I come, the easier it gets and being around everyone at SWELL has been amazing for my mental health too.
“I should have died, but I didn’t, so now I’m doing everything I can to keep my body healthy. In my opinion, I’m not disabled, I’m just missing an arm. I never look back, I always look forward,” Gary explained.
Ashley says Gary is more than just a gym regular, he’s the life of the class. Known for his humour, he’s built friendships and earned admiration from staff and members.
“He’s the class clown and an engineering genius all rolled into one, we love having him here every day. At SWELL, we welcome everyone, no matter their age, ability or background. It’s about creating a space where people feel supported to move their bodies, have a laugh and take steps toward better health,” Ashley concluded.
This Men’s Health Week, take a leaf out of Gary’s book and start where you are. Use what you have, and don’t let anything hold you back!
