For 17-year-old Landon Smith, securing his first job was about more than earning a pay cheque.
Like many young people living with disability, finding employment opportunities can be challenging. But with some determination, a supportive team behind him and training through Belgravia Academy, Landon has built confidence, new skills and a rewarding career pathway at Albany Creek Leisure Centre.
A regular swimmer at the venue since 2023, Landon has long been part of the Albany Creek community. Outside of work, he has also achieved success in the pool, competing at the 2026 Australian Swimming Trials and recording a personal best in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley.
When Landon’s swim coach encouraged him to apply for a role at the venue, Landon completed work experience and quickly discovered a workplace where he felt welcome and supported.
“I was so excited when I got the job and it’s great that I get to work with my sister and her boyfriend Jack,” Landon said.

Landon initially joined the team in a grounds and venue presentation role before taking the next step in his development through Belgravia Academy’s Pool Lifeguard Certification. Earlier this year, he successfully completed the course and is now working regular lifeguard shifts alongside the team.
“Becoming a lifeguard was a really proud moment for me because it let me be part of a team and gave me a chance to learn something new and help other people,” Landon said.
“I love going to work because it lets me be around people and learn new things. It brings a smile to my face when people come up to me and say hello. It has taken me a while to learn new skills and have confidence, but everyone has been really supportive and encouraging.”
Pool Operations Coordinator Clemency Dent, who helped guide Landon’s journey into employment and training, said his growth has been remarkable.
“When I first met Landon, he was a quiet squad swimmer who had just handed in his resume. We started him in grounds and venue presentation work before encouraging him to complete the Belgravia Academy lifeguard course when he felt ready,” Clemency said.
“Since then, his confidence has grown rapidly. He has embraced every opportunity to learn, stayed engaged with the team and became more comfortable interacting with members and visitors. It’s been incredible to watch him grow.”
Gavin Wake, Chief Executive Officer of Belgravia Education, said Landon’s experience demonstrates the impact of creating accessible pathways into employment and training.
“As someone who started my own career as a lifeguard, stories like Landon’s are incredibly rewarding. His journey shows what can happen when people are given the right support, training and opportunity to succeed,” Gavin said.
“Through Belgravia Academy, we’re proud to create education-to-employment pathways that build skills, confidence and meaningful career opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.”
For Landon, the journey is only just beginning. He hopes to continue learning, take on new challenges and help others access the same opportunities that have supported his success.
“I would love to help someone like me have the opportunity I was given at Albany Creek because lots of kids with disabilities find it hard to get a job.”
