WaterMarc’s Boccia Program has been named a finalist for Active Recreation or Leisure Initiative of the Year at the 2026 Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards.
Delivered by the WaterMarc team in Greensborough, in partnership with Boccia Victoria and Boccia Australia, the free community program creates opportunities for people living with disability to stay active, build social connections and develop skills in an inclusive environment.
The recognition highlights the program’s positive impact across the Banyule community and its role in increasing access to disability sport and recreation.
The Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards celebrate athletes, volunteers, coaches, teams, programs and initiatives helping advance disability sport and recreation across Victoria.

Supporting inclusive recreation in Banyule
The WaterMarc Boccia Program was originally introduced to address a gap in social and recreational opportunities for people living with disability. Since launching, the weekly program has become a valued community activity that brings participants together in a welcoming and inclusive space.
Run every Thursday afternoon at WaterMarc in Greensborough, the free program encourages participation regardless of experience or skill level. Support workers, carers, family members and friends are also welcome to attend from across Banyule and surrounding communities.
Creating connection through sport
WaterMarc’s Community Engagement Coordinator Hannah Gentz said the program provides much more than an opportunity to play sport.
“It’s a privilege to provide a welcoming and inclusive space where participants can have fun, build meaningful connections and develop their skills, all while pursuing opportunities to compete at state-level competitions.”
“The program is super easy to run. We provide the Boccia balls and group fitness space, along with tea and coffee for all to enjoy a few hours having a roll!”
Participant success demonstrates program impact
Participants have also been able to pursue competitive pathways beyond the weekly sessions. One member, Duke, began playing Boccia in 2025 and has steadily developed his skills through the program, recently securing a silver medal in the Open Category at the Boccia South Australia State Titles.
Alongside Duke, regulars Chris, Young and Nick continue to benefit from the social, physical and recreational opportunities the program provides.
Chris said: “Playing Boccia is a very enjoyable way to spend Thursday afternoons at WaterMarc. I’ve made some new friends and the laughter that we have really has a positive impact on my wellbeing.
“It is inspiring to know we are finalists for this award.”
