To support healthy ageing and reduce social isolation in Darwin, dozens of senior members at SWELL Palmerston are coming together for Fit for Life: a fitness class designed for older adults.
The program, which is focused on strength, flexibility and movement to help older adults stay active and independent for as long as possible, is proving to be a hugely popular addition to the classes offered at the venue.
Fit for Life combines accessible exercise with a strong social element, with some well into their 80s attending classes – often with more than 25 members attending. This has formed a dedicated group that shows up week after week.
Ashley Stephens, Venue Manager at SWELL Palmerston, said the The Fit for Life crew stand out for their commitment and energy.
“They are by far the most dedicated group we see here at SWELL. In the classes I’ve taught, they tell me we aren’t working them hard enough!” Ashley said.

The program is intentionally inclusive, with dedicated Group Fitness instructors like Vanessa working with participants at their own level, encouraging them to build confidence and progress.
“Our older attendees are committed to their physical health and the mental health benefits are clear as well,” Ashley continued.
For 80-year-old Cristina, the program is increasing her physical activity and social connection.
“I like my routine on Mondays and Wednesdays; it gets me out of the house. I like all the classes, no matter who the instructor is.”

Community members at SWELL had similar experiences to share.
Diana, 86, said: “Joining a class full of smiling, supportive people keeps my mind, body and soul together!
At any age it is important to keep your body strong and healthy. Attending has improved my strength, flexibility and my balance.”
“I love the friendly, welcoming environment. It’s very supportive. I need the regular classes to stay active,” said Roberta, 72.
“Everyone is able to work at their own level of fitness and it’s great when the instructors vary their routines,” added 73-year-old Kate.
Jacqui, 61, says the program provides structure, motivation and a continued sense of belonging after retirement.
“After retiring, I knew I would need to keep exercising to stay strong and fit. The seniors classes are perfect, with options to challenge yourself or modify to suit. I love that everyone looks out for each other.
“The social element is just as important as the exercise.”
Affordability and routine also play a key role in keeping members engaged.
“I need to exercise to stay healthy and SWELL provides classes at very reasonable prices,” said Anne, 76.
Fit for Life at SWELL is showing the vital impact of programs for older Australians on physical, mental and social health, reinforcing the value of community fitness spaces in supporting healthy, connected ageing.
