Debbie Pennell, better known as Deb, went from aqua participant at SWELL Palmerston in the Northern Territory to instructor in just 18 months, building body confidence and helping others feel comfortable in the water.
After struggling with weight and self‑confidence, Deb found aqua aerobics to be a welcoming and low‑impact form of exercise. Deb is now delivering high‑energy classes, expanding the venue’s aqua program and inspiring thousands more through her TikTok account.

“I originally walked into my first class feeling daunted. I quickly realised aqua offered something different as it removed the pressure I felt and allowed me to move freely in the water.
“That experience motivated me to take the next step. The SWELL team encouraged me to complete my Aqua Exercise qualification, shadow a trainer and I transitioned from participant to Aqua Exercise instructor,” Deb shared.
“When I teach, I bring my experience and training into every class. I structure my sessions so that everyone feels included, no matter their fitness level or where they’re starting from.”
Beyond regular classes, Deb has played an active role in strengthening the community at SWELL. She helped organise World Aquathon Day at the venue in 2025 and supported a fundraising initiative for a long‑standing member fighting cancer.
Deb’s helped grow the aqua program by introducing new formats like aqua cycling and supported plans for aqua step, board classes and expanded pool‑based workouts.
In her TikTok videos, Deb showcases the benefits and energy of aqua training. Even though stepping in front of the camera has pushed her well beyond her comfort zone, it’s allowed her to connect with and motivate people beyond her own classes.

“What I love most is seeing others experience the same transformation I did with their confidence, physical activity and social connections.”
Ashley Stephens, Venue Manager at SWELL, said Deb’s impact has been felt across the entire venue.
“Deb is a wonderful example of what can happen when someone is supported to believe in themselves. She brings authenticity to her classes and she ensures varied exercise options are accessible to the wider community.”
Through classes, conversations and short videos online, Deb is helping others lead healthier, more connected lives, sparking meaningful change within the Palmerston community and through the videos she shares online.
