What started as a school visit to Ascot Vale Leisure Centre has become a life-changing opportunity for Junaid, who progressed from a beginner swimmer to a qualified lifeguard at MOVE Moonee Valley through the All In! Swim Program.
Delivered at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre and Keilor East Leisure Centre, the All In! Program provides a 50% subsidised learn-to-swim program designed to support participation from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) and First Nations communities.

Supported by the Belgravia Foundation, the program uses locally raised funds to reduce financial barriers and improve access to swimming and water safety education. Developed in consultation with Wurundjeri Elders and Moonee Valley City Council, it also creates culturally safe and welcoming pathways into the aquatic industry.
Junaid first connected with MOVE through a school visit organised by the venue team.
“I didn’t really know how to swim. I could save myself, but not other people. After visiting Ascot Vale Leisure Centre and joining the program, I learned how to swim properly and how to help keep people safe,” Junaid said.
Through lessons and ongoing support from the team, Junaid built confidence in the water and developed the skills that led to employment. In partnership with Life Saving Victoria, he gained access to lifeguard training and qualifications and now works at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre, helping keep the community safe.

Community Engagement Coordinator, Jaye Hansford, said Junaid’s journey is one example of the broader impact the All In! Program is having across the community.
“Junaid’s journey is exactly what the All In! Program is about, removing barriers, building confidence in the water and showing people that opportunities exist within the aquatic industry.
“We’ve already seen strong outcomes, with 18 participants completing the program and most continuing their swimming journey beyond it. We’re also focused on creating pathways, whether that’s ongoing participation in our GOswim program, developing water safety skills or connecting people to further opportunities within the community,” Jaye concluded.
