MOVE Moonee Valley team at the MOVE Triathlon
For Sandie, who is thriving at fifty and feeling stronger than ever and Jo, a marathon runner and cancer survivor, the sixth annual MOVE Triathlon was a chance to challenge themselves and spend an active day out in the community.
The triathlon, which took place on Sunday 22 March 2026 at Queens Park Swimming Pool and offered three distance options for all ages and abilities to take part, encouraging the Moonee Valley community to start where they are.
The day’s activities saw seasoned athletes and first-time participants swim laps, cycle through the streets of Moonee Ponds and run through Queens Park before crossing the finish line, back inside Queens Park Swimming Pool.

Sandie’s story – 50 and feeling stronger than ever
“Last year, I tackled the MOVE Triathlon to tick a box before turning the big 5-0,” Sandie, a returning participant, said. Nervous at first, she found confidence through the TRIactive program, which helped her navigate everything from technique to transitions.
Now, she has returned to the training group and has enjoyed the structure and support. “The sessions this year have been focused on technique, ability and practical tips from dedicated trainers and experienced triathletes.”
“Yes, my transition to the bike took longer than the actual swim and I might have stopped a few times on the run – but I crossed that finish line even if it was on very wobbly legs!”

Jo’s story – A triumphant return after cancer recovery
Movement has always been part of life for Jo Smyth. A long-time runner, she has completed many half marathons and finished her first full marathon in Sydney in 2023. Each January, she also lines up for the Pink Triathlon, gradually increasing her distance over time.
In 2024, Jo experienced an unexpected pause after cancer surgery. Recovery required slowing down and giving her body space to heal. When she was ready to return to activity, the goal was to rebuild strength and momentum gently.
Joining the TRIactive program at MOVE Moonee Valley helped her to re-establish a routine through coached swim, bike and run sessions. She describes the process as steady and encouraging. “It’s amazing what happens when you just keep showing up,” she said.
A big part of her progress came from the people around her. “My cheer-squad buddy Mel has been incredible. On mornings when motivation is low, having someone beside you, literally and figuratively, makes all the difference.”
Jo, first from right trains for the MOVE Triathlon
Preparing for the triathlon, Jo said the journey has mattered as much as the goal. “There’s something powerful about setting a goal and moving forward – one swim, one ride, one run at a time.”
Jo shared a message of encouragement for the other MOVE Triathlon participants: “Start where you are. A bit of fitness helps, but mostly the event was about having a go.
“The MOVE team continue to support our community, every step of the way.”
