The Warradale Swimming Team at Warragamba Swimming Pool has successfully completed their Christmas challenge, swimming a combined total of 58,000 metres to support families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities Sydney (RMHC Sydney), raising $5000.
For Duty Manager and Lifeguard Pete Keats, the cause is deeply personal. When his son Grey was born prematurely, RMHC Sydney gave his family a place to stay close to him and carried them through one of the hardest moments of their lives.
Right in time for Christmas, the Warradale Swimming Team’s swim at the pool will give that same comfort to other families.
Pete originally set himself a personal goal of 25 km – but in the spirit of determination, he swam over 33 km, pushing well past his target to give even more back to the families who need it most.

The challenge has been powered by the support of local organisations including:
Nick’s Deli & Groceries, Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Community Centre, MVP Physiotherapy Silverdale, Warragamba Public School, Silverdale Shopping Centre, Warragamba Medical Centre, Body Rescue Therapies, Warragamba Silverdale Swim Club and Warragamba Early Learning Hub.
Joining Pete in the swim team were Michelle Kurp, a dedicated mother, lifeguard and triathlete and Rowena Bellingham, a devoted Duty Manager, lifeguard and tireless fundraiser.
With each lap, the team have helped the charity provide free accommodation for families with seriously ill or injured children, removing the financial burden so parents can focus on care.

“It costs $190 to support a family for one night and every donation makes that possible. The support from RMHC Sydney meant being there for Grey when he needed us most,” Pete said.
“Every word of encouragement we have received from sponsors, supporters and colleagues fuels us to make a difference.”
“The swim was a mix of emotions: I felt grateful for the chance to turn my love of swimming into something bigger than myself. Even when I was tired, I reminded myself why I started. That kept me moving.” Pete concluded.
