This Women’s Health Week, we’re celebrating the strength of women like 69-year-old Beth, who has gone from fatigue and ‘crash days’ with fibromyalgia to climbing stairs for almost two hours overseas and lifting her personal best in the gym.
When Beth came into B Active Health Club in East Fremantle for a review assessment in March, she was battling the all-too-familiar symptoms of fibromyalgia: fatigue, aches, poor sleep and those dreaded ‘crash days’ that left her stuck in bed.
Within no time, the team on site introduced Beth to a tailored 12-week exercise program as part of an Exercise Physiology (EP) membership at the venue and Beth has never looked back.
Beth’s main goals were to walk upstairs without tiring, to improve balance, increase her upper body strength and manage her fibromyalgia symptoms.

With Beth’s EP program tailored to her energy and capability needs, Beth has experienced an incredible improvement in her fibromyalgia symptoms. Not only did Beth’s 30 second sit-to-stand improve by five reps, but her single leg balance also improved by 15 seconds on both legs and she exceeded her personal best with a 32kg, five repetition maximum leg press exercise.
Emma Riggs, accredited Exercise Physiologist at East Fremantle Community Park said, “Beth has worked consistently in our Exercise Physiology group to meet her goals. It was just as exciting for me as it was for her that she was able to increase her capacity and manage her symptoms so significantly in such a short time.
“Here at B Active we are all about belonging, community and support and when members work with our Exercise Physiology team, the results speak for themselves,” continued Emma.
Beth reported an overall reduction in her fibromyalgia related symptoms with improved sleep, reduced aches and fatigue and less ‘crashes’. She also walked for almost two hours and climbed stairs without tiring while on holiday overseas – no small feat for an individual with a chronic condition.
Beth’s story is a reminder of why Women’s Health Week matters. It shines a light on the unique health challenges women face – from chronic pain conditions to fatigue – and the importance of safe, supportive exercise in helping women of all ages live healthier, more active lives.
