At the commencement of the Summer of 2022/23, Belgravia Leisure, along with the industry, had encountered a range of critical and near miss incidents resulting from the Post-COVID impact of the lack of swimming lessons and ability of swimmers within aquatic facilities.
Over the course of that summer, Belgravia Leisure venues experienced over 1,000 Lifeguard Interventions related to aquatic safety incidents, 26% of which were specific Lifeguard rescues of potential critical incidents and a range of instances requiring lifesaving first aid measures.
Through the analysis of these statistics, and the understanding of the premise of Chronic Unease, Belgravia Leisure developed a renewed methodology focused on aquatic supervision and response titled, the Triple A’s for Aquatic Safety.
Being Alert, Aware and Active are the main pillars of the Triple A methodology which defines the strategy implemented to empower our team of Lifeguards and Duty Managers to remained focused and attentive while on pool deck supervising the community.
Each quarter, the Aquatic Safety team develop a range of resources including posters, toolbox talk guides and training resources to educate and prepare the venues on industry and organisational themes and trends to ensure they have the information required to minimise the risk of incident within our venues. These resources are intended to provide support to venue leadership teams in order to deliver daily conversations with Lifeguards to remind them on key focus areas to improve aquatic supervision at all times.
Since the implementation of the Triple A’s for Aquatic Safety, the organisation has seen an increase in recorded Lifeguard Interventions by 220%, and over 500 recorded Lifeguard rescues.
