Around 4.4 million Australians live with disability, representing 18% of the population, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Mobility is the most common disability, highlighting the importance of community spaces where people can stay active and connected.
At Nerang Aquatic Centre on the Gold Coast, keeping their guests active and connected is simply a part of everyday life.
For member Jennifer Johnstone who lives with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, regular hydrotherapy and water-based exercise have become a valued part of her weekly routine. Working alongside her physiotherapist, personal trainer, support workers and the Nerang team, Jennifer uses the pool every Tuesday fortnight for an hour and a half and each Thursday afternoon to build strength and mobility.
While the sessions help strengthen her legs and knees, Jennifer says what makes the biggest difference is how she is welcomed when she arrives.
“I feel the staff makes it special for me because they treat me like any other guest and not someone just in a wheelchair with a disability. I am just a normal person who can do most things, but I need a lot of support workers to help me 24/7,” Jennifer said.
Jennifer’s sister Rebecca says the venue has become an important part of Jennifer’s community and wellbeing.
“It’s wonderful to see Jennifer finding great joy through her participation with others in the aquatic centre’s community. From entry to exit, it’s clear that people are welcomed and assisted to enjoy their sessions, and Jennifer feels valued as a person and thrives in her identity as a community member.”
Jennifer’s connection to the venue also extends beyond the pool. Recently, she presented the team with a painting she created herself, a colourful representation of the venue that now hangs above reception.
“As a swimmer at Nerang Aquatic Centre, I thought to myself, ‘I must paint you all a painting to say a big thank you for having me every week’,” Jennifer said.
“It really makes me feel good to be with other people and have fun with my exercises and getting much stronger.”
For the team at Nerang Aquatic Centre, Jennifer is simply part of the community.
“Jennifer is part of our Nerang family. She always brings her smile, a positive attitude and she brightens our day. We love supporting her as we would any other member or guest. Jen is a gem,” said Assistant Service Manager Iandra Bueno Serafini.
Belgravia Leisure QLD Area Manager Gary Baldwin said stories like Jennifer’s show how welcoming community venues help people stay active and connected.
“Access to inclusive environments allows people of all abilities, ages and backgrounds to stay active, build connections and feel part of their community. I’m proud that Nerang Aquatic Centre – and all our venues – help ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate and ensure no one misses out.”
Jennifer’s story is simply part of everyday life, where people come together to create a community where everyone can participate.
