For many of Australia’s older adults and people managing chronic conditions, returning to exercise can feel overwhelming, strenuous or even risky – especially in traditional fitness settings.
The new Water Walking Group, delivered in partnership with the Heart Foundation at Michael Wenden Aquatic Leisure Centre, was designed to flip that script, fostering a warm, supportive environment that has been strengthening community bonds.
Low impact = long term benefits

“This water walking group gives our community a chance to look after their heart health in a safe, welcoming space, with no pressure or judgment, just support,” said Wishy Murimba, Community Engagement Coordinator at Michael Wenden.
While the group has a focus on physical benefits such as staying mobile, reducing joint strain and improving balance and coordination, Wishy continued that the emotional benefits of the program are powerful. Participants of the group often arrive for exercise and stay for the shared stories and laughter alongside each other.
“I’ve seen participants make massive progress in terms of their physical and emotional health due to its sustainable nature,” she continued. “It’s offered hope to people who need it most, regardless their of age, ability or where they’re starting from.”
Several participants have left positive feedback for the program, reporting:
“I no longer need to take pain medications for my leg – I’m able to walk for longer.”
“I can walk an extra one hour most days of the week, when I wasn’t able to previously. I really enjoy it.”
“I’d like to continue to program; it has helped to reduce my lower back pain from having slipped discs. Being pregnant has increased the pain and water walking has helped.”

Warm welcome to all
Sessions take place in the heated indoor pool, allowing participants to move freely and without pressure. For many, this becomes a place where they rediscover strength and independence.
“A special thank you to Kimberley Rainer, Exercise Physiologist from South Western Sydney Local Health District and Elizabeth Hannah, Walking Program Officer from the Heart Foundation for their support in delivering this program,” concluded Wishy.
By design, the Water Walking Group program removes the barriers that keep people from moving, giving them the tools to conquer the fear, pain and self‑doubt associated with returning to exercise.
A simple idea with transformative impact
Michael Wenden’s ongoing commitment to inclusive, community‑led programs that meet people exactly where they are is reflected in this program. With every session, the venue is building a stronger, healthier, more connected Liverpool: one that understands the holistic approach to wellbeing including physical, social and emotional factors.
It has created a space that acts as a lifeline, where risk feels manageable. The simplicity of the program is its strength, which has proven to be transformative for people who once believed exercise was no longer within reach.
